Ideas

Your feedback drives our design process. Your votes count! Let us know what you want to see from OpenShift.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Support OpenShift Silver purchases worldwide

I quite happily have a staging site running on OpenShift Online, and have spent quite a lot of effort getting the code and database ready for a live launch soon. In order to do this, I figured we'd have to sign up for OpenShift Silver to pay for the ability to use our own domain name and SSL certificate... And then I discover that for some incredibly strange reason, Red Hat doesn't allow people to sign up for OpenShift Silver outside of a limited set of countries: The US, Canada and several European countries. (I'm in Australia) I am happy…

    • Support for the Play! Framework

It would be sweet if the Play! framework 2.0, since it usually requires less memory than other web servers, it would be perfect on a PaaS. (I'll try to do a DIY when I can find time) If Scala support is then added, it would be perfect, but that's another request that's already done.

      • Please provide a DNS SERVER

I think maintaning a dns server is not so hard for you guys and it will bring tons of new users to openshift. Please provide dns servers to save us trying ridiculous ways to use both www and non-www version of our domains.

          • Include GraphicsMagick package in OpenShift environment

Currently OpenShift includes ImageMagick which is found to be slower and less efficient than GraphicsMagick. I'm surely not the only developer who has an application that needs fast and efficient server-side image processing so we would all benefit from including GraphicsMagick in our environment either as a supplement to ImageMagick or as a replacement. GraphicsMagick can be found at http://www.graphicsmagick.org/ and it has a well-maintained NodeJS package at http://aheckmann.github.com/gm/ Since ImageMagick and GraphicsMagick share a common ancestry they have a similar API and it seems many tools can utilize either package. The switch would provide developers with an instant speed…

              • Web Application Firewall (mod_security)

It would be excellent if for every gear / app type, the user could decide whether or not they wanted Web Application Firewall filtering enabled. Ideally it'd be on by default and placing a file in a specific directory (like .waf_disable in the root of the git repo) would disable it if it were causing issues. By Web Application Firewall I mean inline filtering requests for XSS, XPATH Injection, SQL Injections etc and all of the other common vulnerabilities found in web apps. For the near term, I've created a template so anyone interested can run their own WAF front-ending…

                  • Make databases scalable

Currently databases are limited to one gear, obviously this can be a huge bottle neck in scaling your application. It would be great if databases could scale as easy as applications.

                      • Include ffmpeg on OpenShift nodes by default

Ffmpeg is one of the leading audio and video codec libraries. PaaS offerings like OpenShift open up incredible opportunities for the hosting of simple, powerful applications. Audio and video are obvious aspects of modern technology in our culture that won't go away; manipulating and serving them is essential to many applications. Nearly any project that uses audio or video has the need to streamline this content, and ffmpeg would help make that possible. Currently it is possible to install ffmpeg, but at the expense of over 1 GB of storage. Such an important program should be included by default.

The scheduled release date for JDK 8 is 2014-03-18*. JDK 8 brings significant changes to Java including lambda support, and a vastly improved Date and Time library. Support for JDK 8 would be swell. https://blogs.oracle.com/java/entry/java_se_8_schedule

                              • Native support for play framework application

Right now you can deploy play framework applications to openshift generating an exploded war folder, like it's explained in this article and in this tutorial. There are a couple of disadvantages to this approach. Mainly that you cannot take profit of play framework support for asynchronous requests (something that linkedIn engineers found quite valuable). More over, the first time you deploy, it takes quite a lot of time, because of the play libs. The fact is that Play! uses Netty, a non-blocking I/O protocol library built by the JBoss team. It combines non-blocking I/O with an elegant continuation-based programming model…

                                • Amazon S3 mounted locally

I'd like to be able to define an S3 bucket which will be automatically mounted on the local filesystem for the application. This way writing files under $OPENSHIFT_DATA_DIR/s3/ will write the data directly to Amazon. There are several fuse based s3 implementations so this shouldn't be very hard to implement.

                                    • at least one port for external use (excluding 8080), please

open for external use at least one port (I want to use sockets, but the proxy on port 80 redirect http traffic only)

                                      • Bitcoins as a payment method for Paid Plans

In many countries, it is difficult to pay with a credit card or paypal. And Bitcoin works worldwide! I feel great that there are multiple forms of payment as Bitcoins

Security is important, @openshift. We'd like it if you supported two factor auth. twofactorauth.org
